The 70% Principle: Why You Never Get Projects Off The Ground

Have you got eleven seconds to learn a simple principle?
A principle that will radically change the way you do things?

You do, don’t you?

Ok, tick, tick, tick… here’s the principle.

It’s called..um… the 70% Principle.

So what’s the 70% Principle?

If a job is worth doing, it’s worth doing 70% right.
You can always come back to do the 20% later.

Yes, read it again, and no, the math isn’t wrong.

If you’re going to build a website, a 70% effort is fine.
If you’re going to do a presentation a 70% effort is fine.
If you’re going to bake a cake, for that matter… do you need all the ingredients?

The perfect cake? With all the perfecto ingredients?
Or the cake with ‘70%’ of the ingredients?

The ‘perfect’ wording on a website?

Or the ‘70% perfect’ wording on the website?

And nope this isn’t a case for mediocrity.

No one is telling you to do crappy stuff. No one’s saying that you need to keep your project unfinished. But in the quest for perfection, most of us never start.

The 70% principle is about getting your best effort out and into the hands of your clients. That you don’t need to start off with a 100%-kaboom-wow-start.

So let’s tell you about our ‘who pushed me?’ start in 2002.

We started Psychotactics,in the year 2002, with a 16 page booklet. We called it the ‘Brain Audit.’ And indeedy-doo, it started with just 16 pages. Those 16 pages, we cheekily sold for $20 or thereabouts.

And you know what?

We weren’t trying to keep the pages down to 16 pages, but we certainly weren’t trying to pad up the contents of the book either.

The 16 pages of information were all we knew at the time. And yes, we could have made it 100% perfect, but decided to put our 70% effort out anyway.

Did I say, put it out? I meant, I got ‘pushed’

You see, I wasn’t keen to sell the Brain Audit. I wanted to get the e-book just right. But I was forced into putting it on the market.

I was forced to putting it on a sales page, by another marketer who promised to promote the book to his audience.

And he never did promote the book.

I reminded him. Gently. Then became a bit of a nag. But that promotion never, ever happened. What did happen was that the ‘Brain Audit’ began to sell.

And as it turned out, I was able to add the next 20%, and the next 20%, and the next 20%.

And yes, the math still adds up.

Because all along, that ’so-called incomplete’ product was selling. And when you think about it, which product or service of yours is ever complete?

As your knowledge grows; as your customers ask more questions; as you apply the concepts in different ways, your product or service gets better all the time.

And today, the Brain Audit is a comprehensive document that not only helps you understand how the customer thinks, but is also the basis for being a member of 5000bc; for doing any of our courses like the copywriting course, product-creation course.

What started out as a ‘who pushed me?’ product, now helps us get thousands of customers. And helps us grow our business considerably from year to year.

Kinda like the iPod, you see.

When the iPod came out at first, it was just 10GB (yeah, pathetic ten gigs).

Then it went up to 30GB. And hey, we got video too. Then whoopsy-doo, it was 60GB. And uppity up it keeps going, both in size, features and ease of use.

Where’s the market for the perfect iPod?

There’s no market for the perfect product or service. The product or service that your customers want, is the product or service you have now.

That 70%-perfect product/service, will do fine for your customer.

How can I be so sure?

Could this article have been at least 30% better?
Couldn’t I have found more examples? More case-studies?
Put in more details, perhaps?

Tweaked my words just so to make it richer, more vibrant?

Sure I could. But you’ve got the point, right?

If a job is worth doing, it’s worth doing 70% right.

You can always fix the 20% later.

ClickBank AdRotator – A Great Idea For Anyone Starting An Online Business

Google Adsense has to be one of the top 50 ‘great ideas for anyone starting an online business ‘ that has come out in the last 5 years. After all, it’s an ingenious concept that allows you to simply put little blocks of advertising on your blog or website. Here’s what Google says…

“Google AdSense is the program that can give you advertising revenue from each page on your website-with a minimal investment in time and no additional resources.

AdSense delivers relevant text and image ads that are precisely targeted to your site and your site content. And when you add a Google search box to your site, AdSense delivers relevant text ads that are targeted to the Google search results pages generated by your visitors’ search request.”

I’ve been using Adsense to fund lots of my own adventures and travels and I personally LOVE it. I’ve always felt it’s a smart move for newbies and anyone thinking about starting an online business to begin with, after they have a simple blog or website up.

Having said that, what if you could take the ‘concept’ of Adsense a step further? What if you were to push the boundaries if you will, in the quest to get those clicks earning you more?

In other words, what if we were to take the same idea but to use it with ClickBank products? Now, I realize that this MAY not be as effective because your site or blog reader may not want to fork out the dollars for a ClickBank product at this time…

BUT it’s got to be at least worth a try, don’t you think?

Let’s crunch some numbers first…

Imagine if you could take the average ClickBank product at say $47 with the average commission 55%, this is still $25.85 commission from one click . Now compare this to what you would earn from AdSense revenue in one day from 100 clicks (if you get that many). Yes you got it, $10 – $10 from 100 clicks, this is nothing compared to the automated revenue you could earn from your blog or website with CB Ad Rotator .

Like I said, your reader may not be willing to fork out for a ClickBank product just yet… However, we can pretty safely assume they clicked the link because they wanted to learn more, right?

Anyway… this brings me right the way to ClickBank Ad Rotator . You can see I’ve included one of these ads above. They fit in the page well, don’t you think? The bottom-line is that if you get sales from clicks you’re going to be pocketing serious ClickBank commissions rather than pithy Adsense dollars. Or you can run both, side by side.

I do think it’s something that will improve your life, and as I was part of the ‘making’ of it, it’s a little more special to me.

Lots of things have happened since my last posts. My little world of internet marketing and exploratory home based business ideas has expanded into the picture I wanted it to become. It’s said it takes a good 2-4 years to become really good at something and a good 10 years to become an expert.

That sounds ’bout right, ’cause I feel as if I’m getting to the ‘good’ stage now, and its evidenced by some of my results.

Lastly you might notice I’ve embraced this particular style of blog. I’m still using WordPress, it’s just that I’ve adapted this ’subtle’ theme to start with. A few minor modifications and engine tunes to do, but overall it’s starting to shape up real nice. Will keep you posted.

Wordpress Plugin Post Schedule Ping Optimizer

For those of you who are just starting a home business and who have (like I am) decided to use Wordpress as a blogging/website tool, then you might want to read this.

It’s actually some good news. I’ll keep it simple. You see, when you use Wordpress, there are some extra “plugins” that you should add to your blog. For example, a Google sitemap plugin etc.

These little plugins make it easier on you to run and create your internet home business. Because, although there’s a learning curve to grasp all this stuff, it actually becomes easier down the track.

And that’s the aim.

Anyway, although Wordpress is a damn good blogging tool there’s a serious flaw in its pinging system which can make your blog banned. Now this is what I’m reading and it seems to make sense.

I’m going to try this plugin anyway…

You can read more at the link below, but simply put this plugin allows you to post schedule your pings, instead of the Wordpress default setup. And this very important plugin is free too.

Is this how to start a home based business?

Americans spend, on average, 2 hours a day commuting to and from work. That adds up to 10 hours a week and 42 hours a month. So, within a month, many people lose a week’s worth of their productive life.

My theory on home based business idea types. Yeaahh! We’re overwhelmed in it. Way too much mud. You and I both know… that for some, strange, kinky reason we as human beings are attracted like flies to new. New stuff. The newest ebook…

The newest way to do it… the newest and quickest and fastest and…

…the newest internet home business opportunity.

Of course it’s all great, if you want to spend the next ten years just chasing the best newest thing that promises even more… We need to get real and be real. You’ve got to stop that $#!@ nonsense.

I’m tellin’ ya, and I know from experience. You’ve got to say no. No more. I’ll come back to this one in the future… or, I don’t need it now… I’m on project… and, anyway, my home based business idea rocks!

So, no more ebooks, and no more of the newest thing. Really, you don’t need it. I bet you’ve got plenty on your hard drive. Enough good material that should be read, then acted on.

There’s no magical secret. What you’ve got to do is act. That’s your job. Move forward. Take action. Proceed. Start doing something… anything… get one site up, get a newsletter out… register a domain name…

Build on the little successes. Celebrate the small checks. Celebrate the $1.00 Google adsense earning. You can do it. You definitely don’t need more of the newest stuff. It’s escapism.

Because, the truth is… starting a home based business is scary. Staring into the unknown freaks us out. But hey… it’s the way to move forward… move away from this…

Four Ways to Test Your Idea

How to be sure that you have a great business idea before you put time and money into it.

There are four great ways for you to test any product or service idea before you start a business built upon it.

The Best Source of Advice

Number one, seek out people who are already in the same business and ask their opinions of the product or service. Many people have saved themselves an enormous amount of time and money by finding that people who are already in the business wish they weren’t in the business and who wish they hadn’t invested the time or money to get in the business in the first place.

So go and talk to them. Ask them what they think about the business. Ask them if they would recommend that someone else get into the business…

Ask for Feedback On Your Idea

Every so often, at seminars, I have people come up to me and ask me if I would give them some advice on their business, and I say, â€œWell, what is your idea?â€ And they won’t tell me what their idea is because they’re afraid somebody will steal their idea.

The fact is that ideas are a dime a dozen. So be perfectly open. Tell people what you’re thinking of doing. And get feedback from people who are already in the business.

Ask Your Bank Manager For Advice

Number two is to ask your bank manager for his opinion or advice. A bank manager, who deals with commercial accounts, very often has a tremendously accurate sense for what kind of businesses will succeed and what kind won’t.

One 5-minute interview with my bank manager a few years ago saved me $200,000 dollars in an investment. He pointed out to me the weaknesses in the particular business I was looking at getting into, and I had no answer for him.

So I didn’t go into the business and the people who did lost everything that they put into it. Ask your bank manager. Your bank manager can be one of the very best sources of business advice.

Check With Family and Friends

Number three, ask your friends, ask your family, ask your acquaintances for information. Family members are very good targets for market research. Ask your family and friends if they would buy the product or service that you’re thinking of offering.

How much would they pay for it? Listen to their questions. Listen to their criticisms. Listen to their concerns. Because if you can’t answer their questions and concerns in a logical and believable way, it could be that there’s something wrong with your idea.

Talk to a Potential Customer

The fourth way to do market research is to visit prospective customers for the product or service and ask if they would buy it. If you’re thinking of selling something to a company, go to the type of company that you would sell it to and ask if they would buy it if you produced it.

If you’re thinking of selling something through retail, go to the retailer and ask them if they would buy it or sell it. Ask the customer. Customers are very open and very candid and sometimes they’ll give you insights that will be worth their weight in gold.

If you’re going to sell through a retailer, ask the retailer if he or she could sell the product if they were carrying it. Why or why not?
